Week 3 EDUC 5313
This week I was tasked with reading chapter 6 of the book How People Learn II: Learners, Context, and Culture. I was assigned with better understanding what helps to get students motivated to learn. Students care about the beliefs and values, social and cultural influences, and their own goals. As educators we are tasked with finding the best ways to get students to participate in school. By combining the 3 motivating factors for students along with integrating technology (which they love) I am able to gain ideas on how to best teach my students.

Hello Zoie,
ReplyDeleteI liked your use of the infographic and the explanations of the ideas from the readings. Students definitely do learn better when connecting lessons to real world issues. They are interested in what is going on with the world. When we are able to connect the past to the present it keeps them engaged. Representation also does matter. If students do not feel they are being represented properly, it can also lead to a lack of engagement. As an English teacher currently, I am trying to diversify the texts we read to keep things more interesting and to appeal to various cultures. Goals are also crucial as well. Students of mine set goals on achieving higher scores on the reading diagnostic. They were more motivated than ever and did phenomenal I was so proud of them. Overall, great post!
