Week 5 EDUC 5313

Part 1 I chose to look at the article titled "Professional Development with Universal Design for Learning: Supporting Teachers as Learners to Increase the Implementation of UDL" written by  Stephanie L. Craig, Sean J. Smith & Bruce B. Frey. In the article they address a quasi-experimental study of the effects of a professional development program on teachers’ implementation of the UDL framework (Craig et al., 2019). The framework consists of over arching ideas that guide their UDL advances for the classroom.  UDL Framework: Provide multiple means of engagement This address students' emotional and social requirements, understanding that every learner must form meaningful connections to their studies, maintain persistence in their efforts, and develop self-management abilities (such as managing stress and reflecting on their progress) in order to achieve their objectives (Craig et al., 2019). Provide multiple means of representation This supports the brain’s recognitio...

Week 4 EDUC 5313

Part 1 Magic AI is something I am already familiar with. I used the DESE standard 6-8.WH.3.CC.A which is Analyze the rise and fall of classical civilizations to determine their significance to future societies. I then added into Magic AI to also incorporate ISTE standard 2.4.c. which is use collaborative tools to expand students authentic, real-world learning experiences by engaging virtually with experts, teams and students, locally and globally. The lesson provided by Magic AI does a great job of connecting both of the standards I asked it too use in the lesson. One improvement I would make is too break down the lesson more. When it comes to understanding the rise and fall of a civilization it helps to be more specific about what parts of GRAPES you are focusing on. In my opinion I do believe the lesson Magic AI created is rigorous. The lesson is definitely not for a single day. This lesson has a great overall finishing project but for an individual lesson it wouldn't work. On a ...

Week 3 EDUC 5313

This week I was tasked with reading chapter 6 of the book How People Learn II: Learners, Context, and Culture. I was assigned with better understanding what helps to get students motivated to learn. Students care about the beliefs and values, social and cultural influences, and their own goals. As educators we are tasked with finding the best ways to get students to participate in school. By combining the 3 motivating factors for students along with integrating technology (which they love) I am able to gain ideas on how to best teach my students.  References: Gura, M. (2020). Week 2 EDUC 5313

Part 1 Authentic Intellectual Work/ Authentic Instruction and Assessment  AIW is based upon building critical thinking skills and allowing students to use concepts they learn in school in real world situations. Authentic Intellectual Work means that "they use a prior knowledge base, strive for in-depth understanding rather than superficial awareness, and develop and express their ideas and findings through elaborated communication"(Newman, King, & Carmichael, 2007, p. 4). This type of learning differs from traditional learning because traditional learning is focused on what I call one moment learning. Traditional learning focuses on memorizing content and getting as many questions correct as possible. Students aren't applying their learning like they do with AIW.  Authentic Intellectual Work has three main components that it follows. AIW uses construction of knowledge, disciplined inquiry, and values beyond school. As a social studies teacher I like focusing on disci...

Week 1 EDUC 5313 Blog

Hello! My name is Zoie Riggs, I'm 24 and I am from Kansas City Missouri. Currently I am a seventh grade social studies teacher. This is also my first year teaching and I am just trying to make it through the year😅. My goal for the future is too eventually switch to high school social studies. Another goal of mine is too move as quickly along the pay scale as I can. At the moment teaching is what I see myself doing for the rest of my life. I enjoy being able to be there for students and make connections so I want to stay in a classroom for awhile before exploring the idea of doing something different.   Creative Communicator, 6.b, states create original works or responsibly repurpose or remix digital resources into new creations.  According to Missouri state standard 6-8.WH.2.PC.B students are expected to describe the origins, structure, and essential beliefs of Judaism, Hinduism, and Buddhism. Students can create a research based one pager in regards to a religion ...
